This past Friday at approximately 5:30 PM two Kingsborough students were driving away from the College on Oriental Blvd going west. There was little traffic and the driver pushed the gas pedal harder. Her white SUV was unable to negotiate a right turn onto Dover Street. She hit a parked blue SUV on her driver’s side and moved the SUV 10-15 feet next to a hydrant. Do the physics. How much force does it take to move an idle 3500 pound parked vehicle? Answer-a lot.
The screech of her brakes and the sound of the impact was heard 1-2 blocks away. Her white SUV deployed the airbags, her car crumpled as designed in a crash. Both driver and passenger were luckily able to walk away. If any adult, child, dog or cat were in the crosswalk they would have been thrown into the air. Their chances of surviving such an impact would be next to none.
Kingsborough must educate their students and staff that our streets are not a speedway. Manhattan Beach deserves better, much better.
